STAGE PLAY PRESENTED BY PIP THEATRE
Co-designer: Genevieve Morrow Ganner
Bess Wohl didn’t have much to say about how the set should look, but she did say this: It’s all contained in a box. The box is a house.
I was immediately taken by the imagery of the box. What is the Box? What does the box represent?
Through script analysis and discussions with my co-designer we discovered that for us at least, the box represents purgatory. More specifically, the concept of marriage as purgatory. A holding cell waiting for whatever comes next. A liminal space.
With this in mind we have created the suggestion of a box. This box is a house.
Everything contained within this box has been carefully selected with liminality in mind. Each piece falls within a limited colour palette. Nothing is too hard, too new, too old, too bold. It is inviting and uninviting simultaneously. There is a world outside the box, but not here, not now.
Maybe we all have a box. This box belongs to Bill and Nancy.
