Escape from Monotony is an interactive installation — a space designed to be explored, activated, and transformed by its audience.

Created by Counterpilot for Museum of Brisbane and presented from December 2022 to April 2023, the work reimagines office life as a surreal corporate purgatory. Within this world of flickering fluorescents, carpeted walls, and administrative absurdity, whimsical interventions invite visitors to disrupt the monotony through movement, sound, play, and collaboration.

Conceived as a reverse escape room, the installation is less about leaving the space than escaping routine itself, using imagination and collective interaction to transform the environment.

MONOTONE INDUSTRIES INC RECEPTION DESK. WILL YOU ANSWER WHEN IT RINGS?

DESK ACTIVATION - THE STAPLER CHANGES THE LIGHT, THE DRAWERS PLAY MUSIC AND THE PHONE ACTIVATES PROJECTION ACROSS THE ROOM. WHAT KIND OF MADNESS IS THIS?

THE LAMP PLAYS SOUND AND THE COFFEE MUGS MIGHT CHANGE THE LIGHTING FOR THE WHOLE SPACE (IF YOU PLACE THEM ON THE COFFEE STAINS, WHICH OF COURSE, YOU DO)

LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE WALKED ACROSS THE CARPET AND NOTICED THE PLANTS MOVE. SPOOKY.

THIS DRAWER IS FULL OF RUBBER BANDS. IT ALSO PLAYS PERCUSSION.

TYPE IN NONSENSE ON THE KEYBOARD AND YOU MIGHT JUST TAP INTO THE SECRET SURVALENCE FEED

IS THAT A COFFEE STAIN ON THE WALL? INTERESTING...
